MANAGEMENT MINUTE: 3 statements you should never say when letting someone go

say-to-someone-youre-letting-goDon’t beat around the bush when letting someone go. If you have to lay off or fire an employee, the worst thing to do is to be indirect or insincere.

One of the most difficult tasks for a supervisor is letting an employee go. When the burden of firing an employee falls on your shoulders, you want to know exactly what to say and what not to. Approaching this delicate situation is never easy.

Although they’re well-meaning, here are three of the worst phrases you could say when firing an employee:

  • “How’s the family?” Don’t beat around the bush; it’s insulting to the other person. He knows there’s a reason for the meeting. Instead say, “Have a seat,” and get right to the point.
  • “Let me know if I can help.” Don’t offer assistance after terminating the professional relationship. If you really want to help, limit yourself to a good recommendation. Also, give him his final paycheck or make arrangements for him to get it.
  • “Take all the time you need.” You don’t want the employee hanging around. For his sake and for the company’s, you want him out quickly. Give him a deadline, be it right away or by the end of the day. Thank him for his time, and show him to the door.

Be candid and respectful during such a meeting. You will lessen the blow and may even gain respect.
